Writing Center Director of Oxford Campus Attends AP Reading in Kansas City, Missouri for 7th Consecutive Year

Brad Campbell, Director of the Oxford Campus Writing Center, will attend the 2016 AP English Language and Composition Exam Reading in Kansas City, Missouri. This is the seventh consecutive year he has attended the reading, and he describes it as “the best professional development opportunity in the field of writing and composition studies.” Each year, Brad scores anywhere from 1,500 – 2,000 written exams taken by high school students from across the United States. As part of the week-long AP Reading, Brad participates in a number of professional development activities, including workshops, rater norming sessions, readings, lectures, and social networking events. Commenting on the value of the reading, Brad notes, “The AP reading allows me to network with composition teachers and professors from across the U.S. as we all embark on a journey to discuss and evaluate the core principles that underscore strong writing and exceptional pedagogies in composition classrooms. I value this experience like none other, and I always return to the classroom and the writing center with new methods for engaging students in the practice of writing and critical thinking.” Brad will continue to use the AP Reading as an opportunity to advance his knowledge of composition studies, network with professionals in the field of writing and rhetoric, and shape his teaching  and writing center work in the future.

TYCAM Invites Speakers from DWR/Writing Centers to Speak at 2015 Conference

Department of Writing and Rhetoric Instructor Jenny Jackson, Tupelo campus Writing Center Director Rachel Johnson, and Oxford campus Writing Center Director Brad Campbell were invited to speak at the 2015 Annual TYCAM Conference, which took place in September 2015 at Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS. Speakers discussed the role of writing centers in first-year composition programs and student support, as well as strategies for implementing and operating new writing centers in institutions around the state.

Department of Writing and Rhetoric and UM Writing Centers Host MSWCA 2015

The Department of Writing and Rhetoric at the University of Mississippi is excited to announce the annual Mississippi Writing Centers Association (MSWCA) conference held in conjunction with UM’s own fourth annual TutorCon in Oxford, MS, on January 29-30, 2015.

This year’s theme, “Lines of Connection, Lines of Communication,” seeks to capture/explore the ways in which writing centers communicate and connect across communities, institutions, campuses, and digital/technological pathways. These lines of communication and connection loop, echo, and build on each other in important and complex ways. As the writing center model expands in Mississippi at the university, community college, and secondary school levels, our collaborations throughout our communities warrant consideration and celebration. Additionally, the incorporation of more and more technology into writing center practices presents both exciting opportunities and complicated challenges for our relationships with the groups we serve.

By staging TutorCon alongside MSWCA, we aim for a conference where administrators, tutors, and students are able to explore these issues together by sharing strategies and experiences, challenging norms, and drawing attention to key areas for improvement.

Conference Presentation Nationally Recognized

A presentation at the International Writing Centers Association conference in Orlando, Florida, by UM Oxford Writing Center director Brad Campbell, former assistant director Ben Lowery, and senior consultant Taylor Brack was recently featured in a Sweeland Digital Rhetoric Collaborative review.
