Writing Center Director of Oxford Campus Attends AP Reading in Kansas City, Missouri for 7th Consecutive Year

Brad Campbell, Director of the Oxford Campus Writing Center, will attend the 2016 AP English Language and Composition Exam Reading in Kansas City, Missouri. This is the seventh consecutive year he has attended the reading, and he describes it as “the best professional development opportunity in the field of writing and composition studies.” Each year, Brad scores anywhere from 1,500 – 2,000 written exams taken by high school students from across the United States. As part of the week-long AP Reading, Brad participates in a number of professional development activities, including workshops, rater norming sessions, readings, lectures, and social networking events. Commenting on the value of the reading, Brad notes, “The AP reading allows me to network with composition teachers and professors from across the U.S. as we all embark on a journey to discuss and evaluate the core principles that underscore strong writing and exceptional pedagogies in composition classrooms. I value this experience like none other, and I always return to the classroom and the writing center with new methods for engaging students in the practice of writing and critical thinking.” Brad will continue to use the AP Reading as an opportunity to advance his knowledge of composition studies, network with professionals in the field of writing and rhetoric, and shape his teaching  and writing center work in the future.

TYCAM Invites Speakers from DWR/Writing Centers to Speak at 2015 Conference

Department of Writing and Rhetoric Instructor Jenny Jackson, Tupelo campus Writing Center Director Rachel Johnson, and Oxford campus Writing Center Director Brad Campbell were invited to speak at the 2015 Annual TYCAM Conference, which took place in September 2015 at Hinds Community College in Raymond, MS. Speakers discussed the role of writing centers in first-year composition programs and student support, as well as strategies for implementing and operating new writing centers in institutions around the state.

Writing Center Administrators and Tutors Attend IWCA 2014

Instructors and writing center directors and consultants from The Department of Writing and Rhetoric recently presented papers and participated in round table discussions at the National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing and the International Writing Centers Association’s annual conference in Orlando, Florida. Attendees included Ms. Taylor Brack, Ole Miss senior and an undergraduate writing consultant in the University’s Oxford campus writing center; Ms. Jeanine Rauch, Director of the DeSoto Campus’s writing center; Mr. Ben Lowery, W&R adjunct instructor and past assistant director of the Oxford writing center; Mr. Brad Campbell, director of the Oxford campus writing center; and Dr. Alice Johnston Myatt, W&R associate director.

W&R Representation at NCPTW

Presentations included papers on the best practices of collaborative work, online tutoring of writing, and the development of TutorCon, an annual event that is planned by the University’s writing center consultants and administrators. TutorCon brings writing center tutors and directors from across Mississippi to the beautiful Oxford campus for a day of professional development, giving them an opportunity to share experiences and strategies about the way in which writing centers work with student writers, helping them to become more confident and flexible in their writing skills.

Conference Presentation Nationally Recognized

A presentation at the International Writing Centers Association conference in Orlando, Florida, by UM Oxford Writing Center director Brad Campbell, former assistant director Ben Lowery, and senior consultant Taylor Brack was recently featured in a Sweeland Digital Rhetoric Collaborative review.
